Johnny Cash’s song “one piece at a time” comes to mind when reflecting on a recent bike trip and a builder we met down south.
Johnny Cash’s song was about a car tech who took one part home from a GM factory every day for a few years. Eventually he built an automobile that was completely one of a kind.
A few months back we were riding in Tennessee and happened upon a crew from NC. One of the guys was a custom builder and shop owner going by the name “Steel Khaos”. He had a unique vision for his cycles – not for everybody – but his style was unmistakably his own!
We often get notes asking for original baggers – not of the stretched and glossy varietal showcased in the pages of every magazine. This is your chance to appreciate something that you’ll never, ever be able to replicate!
Some versus of the Cash song are below:
“I’d get it one piece at a time
And it wouldn’t cost me a dime
You’ll know it’s me when I come through your town
I’m gonna ride around in style
I’m gonna drive everybody wild
‘Cause I’ll have the only one there is a round.
…
The transmission was a ’53
And the motor turned out to be a ’73
And when we tried to put in the bolts all the holes were gone.”
