Cigar Review – Alec Bradley Pensado | Alan Rubin – we the people thank you

August 16, 2013 by TheTravelWriter

Cigar Aficionado’s 2011 Cigar of the Year, need we say more? Sure – it’s not that expensive either! I’m going to start off by saying this cigar frikin’ rocks! Yeah, we’ll get into tasting notes and whatnot, but this is one of the best full cigars I’ve had in ages. The only bad thing about this Pensado is that it took me 2 years to acknowledge its existence. For all intents and purposes I’m rebranding the Pensado to El Guapo. […]

The Legendary Silver Dollar Saloon Leadville, CO | A Spectral History

August 15, 2013 by TheTravelWriter

We say and do believe it’s not about the destination, it’s about the ride. However, when it is in fact about the ride and not the destination, often times you end up in a unique place. The planned 500+ mile ride from Sturgis to Aspen was cut short due to the myriad of deer on the road and having been told by locals that the route from Leadville to Aspen was considerably more rampant with wildlife and that we’d be […]

Reflecting on Sturgis

August 12, 2013 by TheTravelWriter

Our last evening was spent again in Vegas.  We didn’t necessarily have this destination in mind during the trip nor were we certain we’d make it the 705 miles all the way down from Leadville, CO but we did.  It was a welcomed stop as we’d been up at the crack of dawn, started the day out at 11,000 feet and 37 degrees and ended in the 90’s. We were worn out from the week and the day’s ride, but energized by […]

White Knuckle Riding

August 12, 2013 by TheTravelWriter

Ever since The Tail of the Dragon the term white knuckle has been given new meaning.  Specifically, on our Sturgis trip this phrase became memorialized.  What’s a white knuckled ride to one may not be so to another however what remains the same is that this is a ride that shoots sparks of adrenaline through your mid section upwards causing brief perspiration on your forehead followed by ultimate alertness.  This is the feeling of truly being alive – pupils dilated living in the […]

Darkness Does a Number on the Mind

August 12, 2013 by TheTravelWriter

I’ve had the fortunate pleasure of riding to exhaustion and once at that point to where my mind starts to wander about the finer things in life like high thread count Egyptian cotton sheets and plush pillows, I’ve had to find strength to push on to the destination.  Nobody likes riding tired and it sure isn’t safe, but it happens and you’ve got to be prepared for it and its implications. I remember when I was a ripe 17 years of […]

The Pilgrimage | Sturgis Part 1.0

August 3, 2013 by TheTravelWriter

Here I am 34,000 ft in the air rocking like I’m in one of those heart shaped motel beds you feed quarters to. I figure the accommodations that we may be staying at along our ride from LA to South Dakota will be similar. Frankly, if we are lucky this is what we’ll come upon in the early morning hours when our buddies who don’t ride that often anymore are bitching. Ha! Fully prepared over here to be sleeping in […]

Ride Prep | Mind over matter?

July 23, 2013 by TheTravelWriter

If you ride, like actually ride meaning more than from your house to the city to cruise the strip and look cool you’ll understand the need to maintain some level of physical health. I’m referring to one thing here – the lower back.  As we all get older many of us will begin to experience some degree of pain.  Lower back pain is very common in older dudes and if your formative years were anything like mine your likely experiencing […]

First Time – Jalapeño Hush Puppies

July 23, 2013 by TheTravelWriter

After the mishap on the Tail of the Dragon the unyielding Road King needed to be checked out so we made our way to a Harley Davidson shop out by Swannanoa, NC.  Great people there by the way!  Took me right in, fixed some stuff and gave me the OK to continue on for our remaining 1,500 miles safely even though I was missing some fairly important parts (like a saddlebag for example). Going off of the advice from the […]

The Tree of Shame

July 23, 2013 by TheTravelWriter

Here he lies with pistons and crank Burried up to his ass In the face of this bank He challenged the Dragon To have some fun As you can see, the Dragon won!! -Carl Cooper Deals Gap, North Carolina is home to the Tail of the Dragon. An eleven mile stretch of more twisties than you can fathom through the Smoky Mountains. No intersecting roads, no houses, many of these hairpin turns are banked, few guard rails and even fewer […]

The Badwater Ultramarathon – but for bikers! Account and Recap Numero 2 of 1,000 miles in 24 hours

July 22, 2013 by TheTravelWriter

Your experiences are yours alone.  Many may be shared, but what is impactful to you is unique based on prior life events, outlook, neurological wiring, etc.  From the communication of shared experience what emerges is the understanding of how much is actually occurring at any given moment in time.  It aids us also with gaining new perspective.  How those different experiences are reflected upon and shared with one another matters. My longest ride, which I’d done twice (Memorial Day 2011, 2012) was […]

First Thoughts: 120R HD Crate Motor

May 10, 2013 by TheTravelWriter

Taking the bike on the road after this install is like the first cycle of andro…not that I’d know!  Inside you’re amazed and maybe a bit shocked, but to the outside world you’re confident as hell, so much so that it wouldn’t be weird at all to have steam firing out your nose.  It’s an experience – the new motor that is.  I’d need a dual degree in art history and literature as well as a soap box to properly […]

Find me the A*%hole who buys this thing

March 20, 2013 by TheTravelWriter

http://bit.ly/Yq0sEv I think a couple extra zeros were added to the left of the decimal place by accident. There may and I stress may be somebody out there who would seriously consider buying this majestic Big Bird chariot which contrary to the look they’re going for – does not fly over the rainbow.  Skittles and Necco waffers come to mind.  I’ve just vomited in my mouth. Seriously, Kenny Powers wouldn’t even be seen on this thing.

The Philosophy of the Unnecessary

March 20, 2013 by TheTravelWriter

On the heels of our article – A Slippery Slope. “It’s not you, it’s me” says self to my 2009 Road King Police (FLHR). “Honestly, you’re perfect just the way you are, but you could be so much better.  Don’t you want to be better?”  Fairly certain, if the bike had fists it’d knock my teeth down my throat and tell me I should like it the way it is. Let’s face it, of the many things a motorcycle is […]

Pie and coffee are as important as petrol – Salt Lick / Texas Hill Country

February 28, 2013 by TheTravelWriter

Great finds come out of nowhere, unexpectedly or from seeking them out as a destination ride. I’ve experienced both and though the surprises take the cake the planned destination rides are still thrilling. After all, you can decide what winding and desolate roads you take to get there and are semi-assured where you’re ending up is going to satisfy your thirst for new experiences. I’m not exactly setting this up to undersell and over deliver, but sometimes a good call […]

Behind the Veil – Texas Run

February 26, 2013 by TheTravelWriter

The most profound experience in riding while cutting through open road is being in the scenery, not viewing it from within an encased hunk of metal and plastic. And though innately we feel a connection to these roads less traveled it’s important to remember we are guests of these places – wherever that may be for you. Native we are not. Let’s call it like it is, bikers don’t exactly roll through town in an unobtrusive and inconspicuous fashion. And […]
