The man who rode across America solo on Sporty Builds New Bike for Even Longer Ride

April 22, 2015 by TheTravelWriter

John Monastero of Brooklyn, New York brought us the story last August of his trials and tribulations of a 4,000+ mile trip across the U.S.A. on his Sportser – solo.  You can find that recap with incredible images here in this link. As with most of us one bike isn’t enough the same holds true for Monastero.  But, he had to urge to build it himself. Coming to life – a 1974 Honda CB360.  [more photos below]   This was […]

1942 Harley Davidson WLA | If you want it, it’s yours

January 4, 2015 by TheTravelWriter

Some of us at BTB have a healthy obsession with vintage motorcycles and namely those of the WWII era.  There is something about getting the one step closer to the reliving of those days, though you know you’ll never actually be able to do so.  To think the dirt on the floor boards is from an American twenty-three year old who after listening to the world news on the radio about the German invasion got on this motorbike, left the farm in […]

The company that helps you bring your vision to reality | Vismaior

January 4, 2015 by TheTravelWriter

You’ve seen thousands of motorcycles, you’ve envisioned the perfect custom bike.  Originality, stark design – something generally badass comes to mind.  Yet, you’re without resources to make a mock up and have someone help you build it.  Enter, Vismair a 3D design company creating custom motorbikes using their proprietary software to produce images based on the design.  This enables you to visualize your dream and then they help you produce to reality.  Originally posted in Silodrome.  [How it works and […]

From rural Pennsylvania to the Salt Flats of Utah, Dan Daughenbaugh has re-engineered a custom 1951 BSA into a machine capable of world record speed for salt flat racers.  The goal: north of the current 111 mph record.  [Video and tons of photos below]  Photos sourced from Silodrome.

Norton Commando Tracker | One of the Greatest Motorcycles of All Time

January 4, 2015 by TheTravelWriter

The Commando was introduced to the world in 1967 winning “Machine of the Year” for five straight years and valiantly fought off the Japanese competition during the years ’68 – ’72.  This particular bike was discovered, purchased, reclaimed by Federal Moto out of Edmonton, Alberta.  [More photos below from Silodrome] Like seemingly all incredible stories of historic motorcycles rediscovered this one begins on a farm in Rimbey, Alberta.  This 1974 Norton Commando 850 is said to have been hanging on […]

Bandit 9 Motorcycles | A Sub-500cc Motorcycle with Steam Punk Influence

January 4, 2015 by TheTravelWriter

This Bandit in a fleet of eight others is custom built to each customer’s specifications. With a 90cc – 125cc engine size variation it’s not the torquey rip roaring machine many of us are used to, but we have to appreciate the completely unique avant-garde design.  They were on pre-order starting at $4,600 with some high-profile customers across industries.  If you’re interested, there are seven other completely different bikes under their belt found here: Bandit 9 Motorcycles.  Originally posted in […]

eBay Bike of the Week | 2015 Best of the Best

December 18, 2014 by TheTravelWriter

It’s no surprise this 2015 Road Glide is coming out of The Bike Exchange’s Hand Crafted Freedom Machines.  To the nines and not overdone.  In the world of custom motorcycles, it’s easy to appreciate restraint.  Their baggers never come cheap, but have continued to represent originality and class.  And opposed to calling out the asking price, as the term ‘sticker shock’ comes to mind consider it is available for purchase at $599/month for you know…several months.  It’s tough to put a price tag […]

The Solo Ride Across America On My Sportser Bagger

October 10, 2014 by TheTravelWriter

We preface this documentary with a reader beware: if you are married, if you have a job – those things are at risk in reading this.  It is likely you’ll drop what you’re doing and head into the American West.     John Monastero had the high aspiration of making the infamous trek from coast to coast on his motorcycle. This dream of riders, is often left unanswered and in the tired eyes of those who have ridden for decades we see at […]

eBay Bike of the Week – Tricked Out 2015 Road Glides Are Hitting Showroom Floors Already

October 2, 2014 by TheTravelWriter

These eager beavers have done up a new Road Glide and it’s a sweet ride.  Stealth Cycles – we bow our heads.  The reserve hasn’t yet been met at the most recent bid of nearly $25k.  Considering the $15k+ in parts they list, it’s unlikely this bagger is going for anything less than 40 fat ones. If it’s important to you to be the first one on the block with the new shiny toy nobody’s got maybe this one’s for […]

Twisted Spoke – motorcycle shop

August 11, 2014 by TheTravelWriter

This past weekend we were invited out to Scott Latour’s Twisted Spoke motorcycle shop in Charlton, MA off Rt. 20.  If you’re familiar, Scott’s been part of our White Knuckle 300’s with his Eagle Riders crew and these guys and gals can ride. At first arrival, off a country road the building is part of an older factory now housing a fight school with a huge parking lot and grassy knoll perfect for BBQ and good times as were being had […]

Knowing Where to Stop – A Lesson on Restraint

August 5, 2014 by TheTravelWriter

We preface this piece by acknowledging all that is unique and innovative in the motorcycle industry.  What is one’s prized possession and ultimately an expression is another’s bad dream, though often it takes a mishap to stubble upon a way to do something better.  And perhaps this is where we witness the creation of trends (or the death of them). Here, we examine the powerful laws of restraint; not about knowing when to throw in the towel, but when to call it.  There’s a distinction […]

August 1, 2014 by TheTravelWriter

This just in announced by HD and well timed in getting in the last word at Sturgis.  The speculation and hype has been answered – the 2015 line up will include the beloved Road Glide.  (more below…) A smart move on their part because, as recently as last week, Victory was first in announcing at the world’s most infamous biker gathering they would be releasing the Magnum, a touring model that will undoubtedly rival the 2014 Street Glide.  We called HD […]

Why We Ride: Wild Weather & Photos

May 7, 2014 by TheTravelWriter

Last year, during our Iron Butt 1,052 miler from Boston, MA to Knoxville, TN we saw some of the nastiest weather any biker would ever dare stare down.  Only The Axe Murderer, Vanderlei Silva of the formerly Pride Fighting Championship would knowingly seek this out.  Hitting a storm that instantaneously flooded the interstate, causing almost life-ending accidents and one which spun a tornado was enough for us.  But, as the story goes it wasn’t all unsympathetic and at times blasé Mother […]

3 months in asia | A riders worst nightmare

April 21, 2014 by TheTravelWriter

Three months in Asia Pacific will give you legitimate and far reaching perspective; as will any amount of time spent outside the comfort of what you know.  The ability to see the same situation at a different angle and with a second lens.  As time passes however, a rider who doesn’t ride will suffer from great angst causing them to sharply focus on anything and everything that looks or sounds like it’s on two wheels.  This has become reality.  A soft […]

The Wise Ones: Out with the old, in with the new

February 10, 2014 by TheTravelWriter

There’s a whole heap of nostalgia in the early motorcycles of our forefather’s time.  All varieties of bikers may share the same sentiment, as what was once “the way” to build machines is different now.  High tech industrial utility replaces artisanship as Peter Egan in Leanings 2 has so eloquently acknowledged. We think those who truly appreciate the aura around two wheels and what it represents find a kind of peace with the world in the prideful craftsmanship and aesthetic […]

The Bagger’s Creed

January 20, 2014 by TheTravelWriter

When I ride, I ride hard.  On the highway – an open throttle.  In the corners – on rails as pavement is left searing from the sparks of aggression. The wind tears at the far corners of my eyes and numbs my skin.  I am at home in the left while others move aside as I pull on. My days, they’re measured in 100 mile increments. And under moonlight I keep focus as darkness tries to drain my will. On the […]

Marlon Brando v. Jesse James

October 27, 2013 by TheTravelWriter

Toe to toe, who’s more badass?  The modern tough guy, bike builder Jesse James or the original and iconic Marlon Brando? Personally, we think this is an obvious answer though in the interest of remaining impartial we’re throwing the question in your court. Marlon Brando Brando, is considered to be one of the greatest and most influential actors of the 20th century and he was also an avid motorcyclist.  Born out of Omaha, NE in 1924, he quickly gained a […]

When I was a kid I was at an ice cream stand on the Cape when a guy pulled up in a stunning red convertible.  I was really young so didn’t know much about anything and when I asked him about his car he told me it was a Ferrari.  He went on to describe the car and when he got to the maintenance one thing that stuck out was his rule of thumb – if he took it out […]

BTB Part of the Week – Boarzilla 2:1 Exhaust

October 22, 2013 by TheTravelWriter

It is without question if you ride a bagger, your pipes need to wake the dead.  They need to rattle passerby’s bones and frighten little ratty dogs.  Having the right exhaust set up is key and usually one of the first changes we make.  For performance, sound and looks. For those out there with high output motors, we’re highlighting D&D Boarzilla.  The sound  – mean, the look – and they were developed for big bore motors.  After all, there’s no […]

“I will never ride a motorcycle”

October 17, 2013 by TheTravelWriter

I can now admit humbly that these were the exact words spoken through my own mouth some years ago upon a friend’s suggestion I start riding.  Roughly a week later I had my license and my eye on a slightly broken in cruiser – a starter bike so-to-speak. I’d made a promise to a friend I’d known for roughly 24 years at that point I’d never ride. He’s “on the job” and has seen enough for him to be dissuaded […]

Nothing calms the soul like the browns and rock & roll

October 2, 2013 by TheTravelWriter

A number of wise people have told me booze doesn’t heal.  Now, I never taught Symbolic Logic, but I know a thing or two about developing an argument and there are plenty here to challenge such a blasphemous statement. That said, a little – taking off of the edge goes a long way for an evening that calls for it. Tonight, we delve into one of the finer things in life we haven’t spent time on talking about. A filthy bike is usually a good sign, but we all like to see them shiny

September 17, 2013 by TheTravelWriter

We thought we’d share two products that have helped wash down our baggers time and time again after long trips or having been caught in a storm. A couple years ago I’d ridden to a rugby practice and an hour later found myself and the team caught in in a torrential downpour. So bad that roads were flooded roughly 6-8 inches. Everyone ditched and I was stuck either waiting it out or making a run for it. In rugby gear […]
